Senator Speech
With today's economic crisis and the fiscal cliff upon us, it is essential that an effective plan is considered for the future of America. While there are strong points included in the 'AFRO Act' , I believe the ideas mentioned in Section 3 that regard changing the age for those receiving Social Security and Medicare, should be re-examined
The problem that occurs in Section 3, is changing the age for Meidcare and Social Security from 65 to 68. I strongly believe the issues regarding Social Security and Medicare should not be included in the Fiscal Cliff negotiations for many reasons. For one, this action would force more to be spent on medical care, not less. By changing the benefits formula, it would greatly affect vulnerable groups such as the poor and disabled. This is because policy makers would have to change polices to fit these people. Also, these are programs that need the most attention, and should be strengthen not depleted in any way. It is not what caused our debt and it is important to keep those programs strong. Changing the age the elderly can receive those benefits is not a step forward in supporting Meidcare but rather a step back.
I propose that we keep the Medicare and Social Security age where it is now at 65. Why would we cut spending and higher the age when these programs did not add to our debt? Instead, our goal should be to improve these programs with more funding and resources. It is important that we realize how this change will effect those in need of these programs. Now is an essential time in our country for us to be making effective choices, fore those that we make today, will be effecting us farther down the road than we believe.
