Project Proposal
As a junior at Animas High School, part of our required curriculum is to embark on a three week internship of our choice. During this internship we are to be learning in a professional environment of a chosen topic. During this internship, I will be completely immersed into an 'adult world connection'. Through out the internship there will be a final project that we will be working on. This project should be a reflection on what it is that we learned through our internship.
When I think of what I aspire to achieve in my career, there are a few ideas that come to mind. One that sticks out is photojournalism. My absolute dream would to be a journalist for a magazine or newspaper. Particularly, a ski or some kind of outdoor magazine, and getting to write stories on unique events. What I have planned is a mini experience in what I may go onto in my future career. I also have another interest in photography and marketing. Therefore, for my internship I am taking these possible interests and applying them in a local way.
For my three week internship, I have chosen to go to The Durango Herald. The Durango Herald is Durango's local newspaper and has been since 1881. Their purpose is to provide the community with local, national, and international news through writing and photography. This is just reason I have decided to have an internship with them. I have always loved reading newspapers, and magazines, thus sparking an interest in journalism. The Durango Herald seems to be a perfect local place for this pursuit of mine. Through this experience I will get a taste for photojournalism, and have an idea if it is something I would like to pursue.
Throughout this internship, my mentor will be Jeff Eisele. Jeff works as a cody editor at The Herald for the Outdoor section. Jeff will be taking me under his wing for the 3 weeks at my internship. Jeff is also going to be setting up shadows for me as well. Over the course of my stay at The Herald I am going to be shadowing different reporters, photographers, and writers. I also have an interest in marketing and advertising, so for the last week of my Internship I will be observing that department of The Herald.
My final project is what I am the most excited for about my experience. For my project, I am planning on writing an article for the Outdoor section with photography. What I am planning on writing my article about is the RedBull Cold Rush at Silverton, Colorado March 6th through 8th. The Cold Rush is an professional ski competition with 3 different events that take place. Fourteen of the top 'all around skiers' in the world will be coming down to Silverton. The three different events that will take place over the course of 3 days. One day will be 'Big Mountain' skiing, when the skiers ski down an open face of a mountain. They will be judged on their choice of route down the mountain, and difficulty. The second event is 'slopestyle', during this event there will be large rails and jumps they will compete on. This is an extremely unique part of the ColdRush. Normally slopestyle events take place at terrain parks at resorts, not the sides of mountains! Then lastly there is the 'cliff' event. The skiers will be skiing off cliffs and being judged on them as well. I am extremely excited to be covering one of the most unique free skiing events in the world. I will be able to apply my passion for skiing in a very unique way. During this event I will have press credentials that will allow me to get 'front and center' seats. I am hopping that I will be able to interview the athletes and take pictures of the event. I will spend most of my time creating this piece for The Herald so that it can go in the March 23rd Outdoor section. This will serve as publicity for the event, because the next day (March 24) it will be airing on national television.
I am truly excited for my internship. I believe that what I take away from this unique opportunity will be unlike any other. I find it important to get beyond your comfort zone and try something new. That is the only way to progress and grow. Through my internship this will absolutely be provided. I will be entering a place that is very new to me. This experience will provide me with so many lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom, lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I am thrilled to jump into a new place, and see what comes of it.
