New and Improved Project November 20th, 2011
Pacific Sunwear of California, Inc. 3450 E. Miraloma Avenue Anaheim, California 92806 (714) 414-4000 To Whom It May Concern: My name is Jamie Wanzek, and I am a Junior at Animas High School in Durango, Colorado. I am writing in concern to your proprietary brand 'Kirra's Zipper Swing Skirt', that I recently purchased for an important family gathering. I am so pleased that I have the opportunity to write a letter of proposal to my absolute favorite store. Your store offers an incomparable experience with uniquely casual, yet very fashionable clothing with all of my adored brands. A few weeks ago, I had a close family member pass away. In need of an outfit to wear to the service, I turned to PacSun in my time of need. When I saw the 'Black and White Kirra Swing Skirt', it was just what I needed. I bought it for the free flowing, breathable, and silky feel it possesses. The next day when I put it on, it was full of wrinkles. Being that the skirt is made up of 100% rayon is the reason of this. Also since I was in a humid place, the fibers that make up rayon absorbed the moisture, causing the fiber's hydrogen bonds to shift positions. Once the moisture evaporates, new hydrogen bonds are formed. Rayon fibers are also not strung as tightly, therefore when the new hydrogen bonds form, and the wrinkles are created. Due to the loosely strung fibers it also will pill (fuzz balls) on the surface. Another physical property of Rayon is flammability. Due to its chemical properties and how thin the material is, rayon is one of the most dangerous fibers to wear. I would like to suggest that PacSun makes their 'Kirra Zipper Swing Skirt' with another material that won't wrinkle and is safer. I propose that PacSun creates their skirts instead with acetate. Acetate clothing offers the same physical properties of breathability, drape, a luxurious look and comfort as rayon. The two fibers differ is acetate does not absorb moisture, meaning the hydrogen bonds will not shift and create wrinkles. Also since the fibers are strung tightly, fuzz balls will not appear, and this fabric is also a bit safer to wear than rayon in regards of flammability. Although because accetate does not absorb moisture, there should be some precations taken when wearing it. Alcohol in nail polish creates a reaction when in contact with accetate. Truthfully, I believe that a fabric without wrinkles outdoes one that will wrinkle easier. I hope PacSun and Kirra will consider my proposal towards the 'Kirra Zipper Swing Skirt'. It has been a pleasure, and I hope to talk with PacSun soon. Sincerely, Jamie Wanzek 183 Electra Lake Road Durango, Colorado 81301 |
To the left is a copy of my "New and Improved" project. What I decided to do this project on was a recently purchase skirt. Being that I was fed up with the wrinkles that it easily attained I figured there must be some kind of science behind it. Sure enough there was! Since the skirt was purchased from PacSun, I wrote directly to their corporation.
Although this was a difficult project, I did find some straights in my work. I really enjoyed writing a professional business letter. I feel that is a very important skill to attain. I feel that was something I touched really nicely on. I also believe that I did a great job on organizing it in a way that made sense. Although, I do wish I would have done a bit more research into the nitty-gritty's of it. Overall I think that I did worthy job for such a hard topic. Through this project I learned a great deal about science. Honestly, I never took to heart the fact that chemistry is EVERYWHERE. But this project really opened my eyes. Who knew there was so much science involved even in the clothes your wearing to the wrinkles in them. The science that I learned was mostly about hydrogen bonds. How some fabrics have the ability to absorb moisture than others. When the absorb moisture, the bonds shift and create wrinkles in your clothes. Who would have guessed there is so much to wrinkles and fabric! |
