With four years, 314 million citizens, 240 million voters, 50 states, two candidates and one election, America and it's citizens' future is at stake with the 2012 election. There are many economic and social issues that could affect Americans immensely in the long run. Ultimately, voters have the power of picking between two altered paths that will set our country in two opposite directions. One path is the one our country is on now, with President Barak Obama. The other is Mitt Romney's plan that includes a new economic plan, healthcare reform, and a contrasting view on women issues. Whereas, Mitt Romney offers a different strategy for our country, I believe that Barack Obama should remain in office due to his ideals regarding women, the economy, and his push for healthcare.
When Obama was elected office four years ago, he took intimidate action to improve the massive economy crisis and falling deficit; a plan that he continues to improve. Even though the data from the last four years may not show a complete turn around, I believe that the citizens of America must stay positive. Today it stands at $16 trillion and $1trillion in federal deficit. Through ending the war, Obama has reduced the deficit and spending, “We take some of the money that we're saving as we wind down two wars to rebuild America and that we reduce our deficit in a balanced way that allows us to make these critical investments” he stated during the First Presidential debate. Obama also explained in that debate he has plans to reduce the deficit by more than $4 trilllion in the next decade. On the other hand, Romney has not revealed any plans that would reduce the deficit, other than cutting programs such as PBS and more spending in areas of the military and defense. While in office, Obama has already made improvements and has expressed how he will reduce the deficit, unlike Romney.
If elected, Romney would create an even tax cut on every American; a plan that will not effect everyone equally in the end while Obamas plan offers balance. Thinkprogress.org analyzed his plan, and it is a giveaway to the rich that is four times larger than the Bush tax cuts. He claims that he will work to balance the cuts with tax loopholes for the rich. Although, when he is asked, he can't name which ones and his tax cut plan still would not generate enough revenue to make up the lost in tax cuts. To keep the revenue the same, he would have to raise taxes on middle-class families up to $2,000, while making tax cuts on the wealthy by an average of $250,000 year. It is an obvious fact, that the wealthy do not need the relief as much as the middle-class, in this economy. The error that this idea offers, is its similarity to President Bush's, which has overwhelming evidence that it is a failed idea. Obama's plan is more realistic, because he would make tax cuts only on the middle-class families and small businesses; the driving force of our economy. At the beginning of his term he explained that, “I said I would cut taxes for middle-class families, and that's what I've done by $3,600.” He is looking out for those whom have been effected by the poor economy the most, while steering away from repeated failures like Romney has done.
Healthcare in another issue that I agree with Obama's ideals about. Obama has put in place what is known as 'ObamaCare' or 'The Affordable Healthcare Act.' This healthcare act would provide universal healthcare to all Americans. Since all Americans would be mandated to have it, the cost would be reduced immensely to ensure everyone has access to it. The new healthcare would also allow patients with pre-existing conditions coverage without being denied. Although, if Romney were elected, he would repeal the health care law immediately. This would decrease spending, and decrease revenue even more. Also, this repeal would increase deficit by $109 billion over the next 10 years and that he will instead turn Medicare into a voucher program. Whereas, getting rid of this healthcare act, he is also giving insurers the right to deny coverage to over 129 million patients with pre-existing conditions. This is a massive negative towards our healthcare today. I believe that Obama is making a step in the right direction pushing for universal healthcare, while Romney is not working to improve the system.
With the tightness of this election, if there is one distinction between the two candidates, it is their views on social issues concerning women. For myself, this is an issue that affects me tremendously. There are not many aspects to Romney's ideals that I can agree with, with women issues. Romney explains, "I think I've said time and again that I'm a pro-life candidate and I'll be a pro-life president. The actions I'll take immediately is to remove funding for Planned Parenthood." This quote sums up everything Romney stands for, with this issue. I believe that regardless of one's religion or personal beliefs about abortion, especially a potential president, it should be an legal option. There are so many important circumstances that abortion is necessary to some women and for the government to make these decisions for them is unnecessary. I stand exactly where Obama does on this issue, “When Governor Romney says that we should eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, there are millions of women all across the country who rely on Planned Parenthood for not just contraceptive care. They rely on it for mammograms, for cervical cancer screenings.” Taking away access to Planned Parenthood would effect many women of all ages. The stance that Romney would like to take this country in is not a step forward, indeed it is a step backward revoking women rights.
As a young American, the 2012 election between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama will be the first election I am able to vote. I feel fortunate that my opinion will have an impact with such a tight election. Although it is exciting, it has forced me to become educated about the issues that will affect me and the future of America. Due to this research, watching the debates, and formulating my own opinions, I have finally come to my decision. I believe that Barack Obama will be the best candidate for America in this election. For many, they haven’t seen a dramatic turn around from four years ago, although we must give Obama a chance fore his work is still underway. He has America's future in his best interest with everything that he is advocating. Obama has pushed for universal healthcare, something that our country has needed for many years. Barack is also looking out for women rights and improving our massive deficit, slowly but surely. Romney and Obama have contrasting views upon these topics, and I strongly believe that Obama will lead our country in the right direction and down the road to recovery.
